Gertrude's Cat Lives On
This morning, I overheard one of my students complaining that her dad named the new family cat "Gertrude". Being a late Millennial, the name "Gertrude" will forever be associated with Cats resulting from much time in my youth playing Runescape. There's a quest in the game called "Gertrude's Cat", at the end of which, the player receives a virtual kitten which introduces the pet mechanic. It sounds trivial, but back in the mid 2000s having a Cat following your Runescape character felt like a big deal.
I couldn't shake the feeling and so I asked this student how old her father was. She told me he was 37. The timeline checks out. I'm convinced this man named the family cat after a Runescape quest, and simultaneously melancholy that I haven't found wifey and had kids to annoy by naming the family puppy Cortana or something.
